Сторонник жестких мер по отношению к южным штатам в период Реконструкции [ Reconstruction]. В мае 1880 был выдвинут республиканцами в качестве компромиссного кандидата на пост президента. Его короткое президентство (с марта 1881) ознаменовано улучшением отношений со странами Латинской Америки и борьбой с преступностью внутри страны. 12 июля Гарфилд был смертельно ранен на железнодорожной станции в г.
